Extreme Couponing 101: What To Stock Up On and When

So how do you know when a price is good to allow you to "stock" up?  While there is no "price" rule and sometimes you just need to get an item when you need it, I do have some guidelines for myself that I use to know a good "stock up" price!

Here are some examples:

Diapers $0.19 each

Shampoo- $0.50 or less

Tooth paste and brushes: free

Deodorant: free

Body Wash: free

Razors:  Under $1

Lotion: free

Wipes: $1 or less for box

Cleaning supplies: free

Toilet paper: $0.25/roll

Fruit: $1.00/lb

Meat: $2/lb, $4/lb Steaks (high quality)

Potatoes: $3/10 lb bag

Soda: $2.50/12 pk

Cereal: $1 per box

Canned veggies: $0.35

Frozen veggies: free

What to Buy When?

First of all the key is timing. Work with manufacturer discounts, clearance sales, off-season discounts and coupon and discount codes!

Electronics: A lot of electronics are made in Japan. The best time to get good deal is in the spring as they try to unload old inventory for the new fiscal year. Look at big screen TV's before the Super Bowl too! For home theaters, in general the holidays can be a good time and January. Computers, a good rule of thumb is the middle of summer to take advantage of the back-to-school sales or winter holiday markdowns.

Furniture: The best time to buy furniture is Feb-April and Aug-October. So do some planning and look around during these times, you'll find the deals.

Toys: Obviously the holiday season is one of the best times to buy toys. The problem with the holiday season is that everyone else is buying then too and you might not find what you want. Try the end of summer clearance and October!

Cookware: One is in the spring, in April and May, coinciding with the graduation and wedding season. The other is in October and November, with promotions in regard to the holidays.

Clothing: Off-Season, clearance, and try going on Thursdays. If you wait until the weekend you're likely to find other folks ransacking for the best deals and selections which means things have been picked through. And don't forget to bring coupons!

Appliances: Best time is September and October as new models are coming out.

Wedding Gowns: November

Car: First, shop online. You can find out the price of cars online and even locate what and where to buy what you want. Next, the next year's models come out in early fall and to make room - yes you guessed it again - the old inventory has to go. Shop in the early fall. Go at the end of the month - it's all about quotas. If the dealership has made their monthly quotas, they are likely to make a deal. The end of the year again is another great time as they are trying to get rid of all the old inventory.

Food & others:

January: Chocolate, soda, diet foods, frozen finger foods,linens, small appliances, air conditioners, carpeting, winter clothes, bikes, Christmas decorations, motorcycles, boats, sports and weight loss

February: Chocolate, steak, seafood(post Valentine's Day),oatmeal, boats

March:FrozenFoods, easter meal items i.e. eggs, ham, gardening items

April: Candy, eggs, ham, cheese, frozen pies, cake mix, electronics, vacuums, cookware, tires and auto supplies

May: Barbecue items i.e. hot dogs, beef, condiments, ice cream, party supplies, grill supplies

June: Ice cream, popsicles, soda, pianos, building materials, tools

July: BBQ items, chips, grill supplies

August: Cereal, breakfast bars, peanut butter, lunch meat, cold lunch items, yogurt, pool supplies, outdoor toys, bathing suits, summer clothes

September: Cereals, back to school snacks, hamburger, hot dogs, condiments, spaghetti sauce, cars, lawn mowers

October: canned fruits and veggies, dried fruits, stock up on holiday foods and soups and broths, large appliances, lawn mowers

November: Turkey, butter, cheese, canned goods, baking goods, cookware, tools, carpeting

December: Ham, butter, cheese, post-holiday sales, baking goods, some electronics, toys, winter clothes

Coupon DataBar Replaces The UPC

You might start seeing a little bit of a difference in your coupons because many coupons are now adopting the new GS1 DataBar Coupon Format. 
 
You might be wondering why the change is happening.

Here's the answer:

The DataBar accommodates longer manufacturer identification numbers (MINs), addressing a major deficiency in the UPC code. Manufacturers will have the opportunity to develop more robust coupon offers, including values in any amount, as well as cross-promotions with one or two other brands.

Retailers that scan the DataBar will experience automatic expiration date checking, a reduced need for 992 bypass codes that don't require product validation, reduced cashier intervention, improved scan rates and increased speed of checkout.

The DataBar also contains fewer human-readable elements — only the company prefix and the offer code — helping to reduce fraud and mis-redemption.

Where Do I Find Coupons? Extreme Couponing 101

So many of you've asked where do I start and how do I find coupons? My favorite coupons come from Coupons.com, Coupon Network, Facebook, Mfg Sites, & Coupon Dede (ordering coupons online). 

Where to Find Coupons:

It seems that everywhere you look you can find a coupon. But there are a few ways to find coupons, out of the ordinary.

Here are my favorite ways which will help you save even more:

1. Newspaper-

This is a little obvious, but with all the printable coupons available, it can be a little easy to overlook. *If you are a sassy couponer then you will be purchasing more than one of your paper. You can actually preview what coupons will be in the paper by clicking here, then you can buy more papers while you are out. *Keep in mind there are never inserts on holiday weekends.

For extras (for free) check libraries, restaurants and fast food places, doctor’s offices, your next door neighbor, some newspaper offices have places for leftover ads, post offices (same thing), recycle places.

** Many people want to know how people get four coupons or more from the weekly inserts.
Here are ways to make that happen:

Buy multiple newspapers: This is perhaps the easiest one, though not the cheapest. Check your local dollar store to see if they sell the newspaper. Look for weekly newspapers that carry ads or your local community paper.

Buy multiple coupons: You can just buy the coupons that you want.  One of my favorite sties is Coupons By Dede.

Ask friends, family and neighbors: Don’t be afraid to ask people for their copies, especially if they don’t plan to use them! Why throw away money, right? 

Make friends with paper delivery person: The delivery person may have a surplus of newspapers at the end of his/her run!

Dumpster dive: Yes, well this may not be the “proudest” way to get your paper but can be highly effective :) First, make sure you find out if it is legal to dumpster dive in your state. Then all you need to do is find a recycling bin, and take a dive!

2. Printable Coupon Websites-

These are my favorite because you get to print just coupons you want, there is a good variety, and frequent changes. Make sure that you watch for coupons that may have a limit – you may only be able to print so many or you may miss out b/c others have printed them all.. sometimes the coupon will reset.

3. Stores Website -

Same as above, may only be for this particular store so pay attention to type of coupon and if they are good to use for stacking with a manufacture coupon.

Give the store your cell number so they can send you coupons on your phone

5. Mobile/Card Coupons-

Text a code to the store and they will put the coupons on your loyalty card or use a site to do the same thing, for some stores you will probably have to sign up for their e-mails to get the code.

6. Manufacture Websites-

Get it straight from the horse’s mouth. Sometimes you have to sign up for a newsletter, they change each month so print your favorites when you see them.

7. In stores-

Look around! You can find lots of coupons on the items (peelies), next to the price, on the shelves, in the little coupon machines in front of the items. Keep your eyes open! Take a sales flyer when you come in the door! At CVS, use your card to check their coupon machine.

8. On/with your receipt & Catalina -


Check all that stuff that prints out with your receipt and check the back of your receipt. Lots of good coupons come with that because lots of times it’s based on what you have bought and many times they are instore coupons so they are stackable!

9. Facebook-

Become a fan (or “like”) your favorite brands. I will always post these coupons as they become available.

10. Magazines -

I haven’t seen a magazine with more coupons than All You. But, look through your favorite magazine, you’d be surprised to see coupons hiding among the ads!

11. Samples-

Most of the free sample offers that you sign up for will come with a coupon for the product, especially those from name brands.

12. Email or Call-

Your favorite companies and ask for coupons – many times they will send you coupons and often even free products!
